Psalm 93 in Living Color!

The day we were to leave to visit the Japanese coastline was the day I was reading Psalm 93 early in the morning. It read, "The mighty oceans have roared, O LORD. The mighty oceans roar like thunder; the mighty oceans roar as they pound the shore. But mightier than the violent raging of the seas, mightier than the breakers on the shore-- the LORD above is mightier than these!" It was stunning to read how poignantly those verses fit the promise of what God was wanting t do in Japan.
"What an encouragement to meet with pastors from all parts of Japan the last few days who are giving their lives and resources to help heal the victims' lives in the tsunami-affected areas. One pastor, Sato had a church in the Fukushima Daichi area only 2 kilometers away from the reactor. His entire congregation of 250 people had to evacuate the city. Their homes were washed away. His church building is entirely gone. Over 50 members of his church are missing. He stated that for three days there was nothing to eat. But he emphatically said that the church is alive and that every day the church gathers for prayer now and many people have recently gotten saved. “The Lord is really shaking things up,” Pastor Sato told us and even though the congregation is meting without an official building. Though displaced he stated emphatically, “we have joy! Several of he leaders we met had been not only visiting the areas but sending teams there to bring healing in the name of Christ.
On Saturday we visited the coast destroyed by the tsunami, the town of Ishnomagi. Boats and cars atop tall buildings revealed the wave was over 80 feet high! 5000 people are still missing and presumed dead. We were able to give a brand new truck filled with supplies to Pastor Masao Kanaya. I prayed as we laid hands on him and thanked him for his valiance for the cause of Christ. All he could do was weep as he received the keys. He is distributing hygiene kits, water, food, clothing, bicycles and emergency supplies through his church. I am so encouraged by what I saw. What do you guys think?

Pray for Japan

Its not new news that the people of Japan are suffering in the wake of two natural disasters and one man-made nuclear potential disaster. The 9.0 earthquake that rocked the island-nation by it's tectonic author eventuated in a devastating tsunami that claimed the lives of 28,000 people and rendered 250,000 more longing for homes and loved ones while consigned to one of 2000 evacuation centers. The estimated cost to that country is already over $300 BILLION dollars.
I am currently en route to Japan to meet with the leaders of churches and government to assess the needs and strategize ongoing support. Our church has responded financially but I wanted to go personally and encourage those who have been tirelessly working on the field to hand out hygiene kits, food and water to the affected ones. Tomorrow a small team I am a part of including Franklin Graham will touch down and met with Samaritan's Purse field coordinators to get the latest update. I will be tweeting updates (wifi permitting) through the next couple of days. Please pray for the people and pray for God's hand to be seen through the local churches and field personnel. Pray also that the Fukushima reactor will be stabilized soon.

A Tribute to a Dear Friend

Mark MacAllister was the very first staff member I put on staff back in 1982. Born in California, and relocating to Denver, Mark joined me when we first began our Bible Study at "The Lakes" Apartments in Albuquerque. As the little group of people emerged into a worship community and later into fellowship known as Calvary of Albuquerque, Mark was there at my side. Like Jonathan was to David in the Old Testament, Mark became the closest of friends and co-laborers. One of the fondest memories I cherish is that He and I had our own unique way of joking and seeing life in a humorous light that helped to mitigate the harder aspects of ministry and church planting. But Mark also struggled. Pain in his back and a subsequent surgery made daily life a sheer torment for him. Mark also struggled with depression and because of that he became the most sensitive and caring shepherd for God's sheep who struggled with deep issues. He knew the "frequency" that sufferers and pain-bearers tuned into and he could dial right into their thoughts and provide comfort and assurance. Sadly Mark left this world on January 7th, 2011. Though safe in his Father's house and without the constraints of the physical world, I sorely will miss him and am thankful for his immense contribution to my life as friend, counselor and fellow worshiper. Please pray for Marks wife Jody, and his children Levi and Bree.

The Memorial Service for Mark MacAllister will be held at Calvary of Albuquerque on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the main sanctuary. For those of you that cannot make it, the service will stream live online at http://www.calvaryabq.tv/live/ starting at 1:45 pm.

Nothing is better on the human plane than gathering with family. And when all the family members love the Lord and have a common goal--even better! Today we gathered the gang (myself, Lenya, Nate, Janae and baby Seth) to take family pics for this year's Christmas Card. Fred Roybal, Brandi Heft and Khanh Dang met us with their cameras, strobes and diffusers to take the shots. These trusted and creative pros executed some fabulous photographs with some of the foliage just beginning their color-journey towards Fall. The most noticeable thing to me was the absolute contentment and bliss of all being together (family and friends) and having an after noon of work/fun. The picture here is just a shot with my iPhone. Can't wait to do the layout on the Card itself. It's authentically been a wonderful year.

Labor Day

I usually work on a project on Labor Day. I guess I just always thought the name implied that one is to work rather than rest (Crazy I know). But not today. Today I was out on the ocean, my favorite place, with Lenya and hood friends. In 1882 the first Labor Day was celebrated on New York City by the Central Labor Union. It marks the end of summer and nudges us closer to Fall. Jeremiah lamented over Israel saying, "The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved" (Jer 8:20). I hope that your summer was relaxing and rejuvenating and above all, that you missed no
spiritual opportunity--that your salvation is moving you closer to God's perfect plan for you and your family. You'll excuse me for now; I need to get back to this boat ride!

This is my grandson Seth Nathaniel Heitzig on the day of his birth. This kid is picture perfect after the C-Section delivery today. He weighed in at 6 pounds and 1 ounce at right at 18 inches in length. Nate and Janae are very contented and are resting comfortably in their hospital room. I was in the recovery when Seth was brought in to be "footprinted" and weighed. Seriously, no bias about this, he is one incredibly handsome boy! This picture was taken right after his first meal while he was sleeping.

My son Nate and his wife Janae are in biblical terms, "great with child". She is due on August 30th but will probably give birth via C-section on the 26th due to a breech presentation unless the baby turns. Becoming a grandparent is lots of fun but also thought provoking in terms of TIME! I'm speaking of the perception of the increasing rapidity at which time passes. Yes, it only seemed liked yesterday that Nate was a little kid running around in his cowboy outfit. I know, I know, it's very cliche, but it's true. Now with the coming of a grandson my thoughts turn towards "the balance of a lifetime" and how to make maximum impact with time left. The process has been extremely fruitful for me and it has helped me to refocus and reevaluate--always a good thing. At any rate, I am ready to have Seth Alexander learn how great God is by providing him with a grandpa that spoils him like crazy!

I'll be here a few days with Lenya for Pastor's Conference Monday through Wednesday and a Prophecy Update on Tuesday evening. We just arrived in one of our favorite cities on earth--NYC. Lenya and I will be speaking at Harvest in Manhattan this weekend. Mike Finizio and his church have been a shining beckon to this city for years and it will be an honor to address them. Nate and Janae are with us (along with in-the-oven Seth). God loves every person in this city!

I'd Rather Be Home Than in Rome

Got back late last night from our extension trip to Rome. We had just a few extra days after Israel to see some of the historical and archaeological sights in "Imperial City" and I spent one "extra" night there due to an airlines scheduling conflict. That afforded me some time to photograph some of the bridges and historical sights at night. To top it off, it rained throughout the evening and the night which always makes nights shots much more appealing. At one time, though, I was stranded underneath one of the Tiber River bridges because of a downpour. Boy is Rome beautiful in the rain! I stayed out until 11pm getting pictures. Some are features here in this post.
Our last Bible Study together as a group was after touring the Colosseum and the Forum. At the end of the Forum lies the Mammertine Prison where Paul spent his final days before being executed in 67AD. Across form that prison is an ancient church with about 30 steps. We were able to sit there and consider Paul's journey to Rome after appealing to Caesar in Caesarea by the Sea near Tel Aviv, Israel. As we sat there, and sang and shared the word, we ended our wonderful trip to Israel and Rome. It was a great time, but the BEST was getting off the plane in Albuquerque and then walking in the front door of my house. Whats better than trip to Rome? The people that make your life HOME!

The last two weeks marked my 32nd visit to Israel. Though I've been to these biblical sites since 1978 and seen the development of this nation over the past thirty years, I love seeing the transformation that happens to people who go on a tour with me to Israel. The land is beautiful and diverse; the people are a combination of sweet and tough; the biblical places are magnificent. But the best part of all is that one walks away with a deeper conviction in the veracity and power of the Bible and the Scriptures "come to life" well after the tour has ended. What one sees while being in the Land of the Bible helps correct and "focus" what one reads thereafter. We traveled from Joppa to Nazareth to the Sea of Galilee to the valley of Armageddon to Jerusalem. After our tour with 150 people, about 40 of us went to Rome for a few days and were able to have our closing Bible Study on the steps of a church that face the Mammertine Prison in Rome where Paul spent his final days before being sentenced at the Basilica Julia and then beheaded on the Apian Way outside the walls of Rome in 67AD. I only wish that Lenya, Nate and Janae could have ben my traveling companions. They stayed behind due to the circumstances of Nate's broken leg that still needs quite a bit of care. Jesus is Coming

"Jesus is coming!", announced my friend Greg Laurie as he kicked off the opening session at the "Preach the Word Prophecy Conference" at Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside this past Saturday. Similar in scope to the "Epicenter" Conference that Joel Rosenberg and I did in Jerusalem a couple of years ago and the "Alert '08 Prophecy Conference" at Calvary of Albuquerque two years ago, we again had an "all star" cast. Dr. Tim LaHaye, Lt. Gnrl Jerry Boykin, Joel Rosenberg, Greg and I spent the day setting the biblical scenario and giving current updates on movements in the Middle East and Washington. One of the real highlights was the interview of Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of one of the founders of Hamas. Known as the "Green Prince", Mosab was slated to succeed his father and become the leader of this formidable terrorist organization. But seeing the true face of of own extremist religion, Mosab was led to Christ by a Cab driver in London. His book is incredible (I downloaded it on my iPad).

All in all, the conference was a "home run" and the feedback we received was in wholehearted agreement. I enjoyed spending time with these men once again. They are both friends and giants. I admire their courage, scholarship and commitment to Christ. I also had the privilege of speaking at Harvest the following day for their Sunday services as well as Greg's Thursday Study in Orange County. It's always a joy to be there and reconnect with people I've known and loved for many years.

After two weeks of waiting the day for surgery has finally arrived. I
took Nate to the hospital early this morning (5:45) and he is in the
O.R. right now. He was funny--he asked one of the docs of he could
take home his external fixator hardware as a momento to hang stuff on!
That's my boy. Much thanks to all who have written and shared their
encouragement and prayers.

Easter 2010

Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Wow! What another wonderful Easter. As usual, God blew our minds. At the Easter sunrise service we had 87 first time commitments to Christ and 50 re-dedications. Not to mention the dozens of others during our two other morning services. Go God!

I felt blessed to be around such wonderful men and women throughout the day, especially those who helped make each service extraordinary. A special thanks goes to Charlie Hall, Steve Stucker, Allan Wey, and our very own Calvary worship team. Their participation in each service was greatly appreciated.

Happy Easter to each of you. May the Lord bless you as you meditate on His resurrection!

Happy Good Friday?

Why do Christians refer to this day as Good Friday? Why would anyone call the day that someone they deeply loved who suffered and died an excruciating and shameful death good? Death is a dreadful thing! Well, we say that it’s good because of the good results that followed from that day. Jesus' death was part the Father’s plan so that man’s sinful condition could be remedied. It’s sort of like surgery. On Monday my son Nate will go into the hospital for another surgery—the reconstruction of his tibial plateau in his knee. They will cut him with a knife and he will bleed! Screws and plates will be affixed to his bones and then he will have stitches that will leave a permanent scar. And yet we are all looking forward to it! We have been for two weeks already! Why? Because without that surgery, he would never be able to walk again! But with the surgery completed, he will be able to enjoy the rest of his life with mobility! Today is the day that we celebrate the life granted to us through the death of Jesus Christ.Thank You, Lord. Happy Good Friday to all of you!

Nates Going Home

This is at least a bit happier picture than the one of the last few days. Nate is feeling somewhat better today and will be going home (to our place) for a few days until he can have the needed surgery to reconstruct his tibial plateau. The device in his leg will keep the bones in proper alignment as well as providing the required tension that the accident removed. The physical therapist has been in his room making him get out of bed, move to a chair and use his walker--all needed steps towards recovery.

A Long Recovery

Nate is in the hospital for today. I just left there. He was very tired from post-op recovery after an external fixator splint was placed in his left leg. The x-ray I posted a few days ago showed the femoral condyle pushing down on Nate's tibia. Those bones were separated and rotated today for stability and then fixed by this apparatus but the real surgery won't take place for at least another week or so. He will go home for a few days and then have to come back. At that point several screws and a plate will need to be used to reconstruct the damaged area before his long recovery can begin. Sigh!!!!

Fun Can Hurt Sometimes

OK, my son Nate & I love to have fun!!! Lots of it!!! We always have. We mountain bike, road bike, snowboard and even skateboard together. In fact my wife Lenya got us the coolest electric skateboards for Christmas. These are pretty beefy boards equipped with off-road pneumatic tires to soften rough road and bumps--they're very cool! And yes we ride with helmets and wrist guards. (I know the picture above doesn't show it but Nate had his gear on when his "accident" happened yesterday). It was late afternoon and we were having a great time around campus on our boards. Well, Nate loves to stretch his skills to a higher level in anything he does and it usually pays off. This time, it didn't pay off; it exacted a pretty hefty fine! He was going down some mild steps on our church campus by one of our buildings called, "The Hub" (a feat he had earlier mastered) when he lost his footing and stepped (actually lunged) his left foot forward with a mighty thud. The impact of his weight pushing downward and laterally was enough to crack and displace his tibial plateau (The upper articulating surface of the large bone in his lower leg). Even our friend Dr. Heckle said it was unbelievable. At any rate, this bone is now cracked in several places due to his femur pushing downward on it(as seen in the antero-posterior Xray above). He is in surgery today. Please pray for him and his wife Janae. Nate confessed last night on his bed in the E.R., "I really need to stop this kind of activity, don't I?" He's a great guy who had a bad fall. Your love and prayers are appreciated.

Vagabond Prophet

There are two things I really love about life: God's people and music. So it comes as no surprise- that when the opportunity arises to combine the two- I jump at the chance. Recently, some friends of mine (Kenny, Sandy, and Brian) have formed a new band: Vagabond Prophet. Our goal is to play music for God's people.

As you will see from this video highlight of the worship service at the El Rey Theater (Metro Calvary) in downtown Albuquerque, we are going back some years in our sound- to a gospel and Americana style. We've had a blast in our practice time and in leading others in worship.

We have been doing a satellite video campus on Sunday mornings from our church in Albuquerque in the downtown area of town for months now. Renting the El Rey theater for Thursday nights (Renovate College Group) and then Sunday morning at 11AM for main church services has been our M.O...until last night! We decided to do a "relaunch" of MetroCalvary and move the time to Sunday nights. Last night was our first night. With special music and worship led by Phil Wickham, we cranked it up downtown! As you approached the theater from the outside you could hear our turntable ministry (record scratching) drawing a crowd already. Inside was abuzz with people getting espresso drinks, putting bibles in seats and spending the last few moments before the event in fellowship with each other. There were 600 people who came out for our first night and brought friends and relatives, many of whom came forward at the end of the night to receive Christ. It was wonderful. We're hoping that many who live in that area will start making Sunday Nights at Metro their church night and create an outreach in downtown Albuquerque. All I can say is that the Lord really blessed the worship and teaching of His word. It was so exciting that I think I'm just going to go there in person and teach the Word on Sunday nights. It reminded my of our beginnings in the Far North Tehater so many years ago. A fresh work is underway!

A Band of Brothers

Don Richardson and Mike MacIntosh

Some relationships are fleeting and tentative while others remain steady and grow stronger over time. The later reflects how most pastors feel about each other who have served together in the same direction. They intuitively "know" each others thoughts, struggles, needs and joys. I had the privilege of speaking to a group of pastors and their wives on the East Coast in Merritt Island, Florida this week. It was really great to connect with some old friends (including my old roommate from my Huntington Beach days as a California bachelor) to and to make some new friends. I spoke during those three days to pastors from all over the eastern seaboard from Revelation 2 and 3. Also sharing the pulpit was Mike MacIntosh, Don Richardson ("Peace Child"), Pancho Juarez, David Payne (he does the awesome C.S. Lewis one-man play) and Malcolm Wild--the pastor of a church in Merritt Island, Florid--a band of brothers!
One of the highlights for me was after the conference ended on Wednesday--driving from Merritt Island down to Fort Lauderdale to speak for the Wednesday Night service in my friend, Boy Coy's pulpit and then to speak at the College ministry Eikon afterward(what a great group of God's kids!) On the ride down I was with three stellar young men who are serving in ministry with Bob or have been sent out to start churches--these guys have the "edge"--young, bold, energetic, unashamed and filled with love for people. May God pour out His power in their lives as they unreservedly race toward the future to serve Christ! (It was great being with all you guys and gals the past few days!)

Pray for Chuck Smith

I got a call at about 2:30 in the morning on Sunday from my friend Raul Ries in California with an urgent request to pray for Pastor Chuck Smith. Chuck and Kay's daughter Jan called him informing him that her dad was being rushed to the hospital and that she thought something was wrong with his heart. It turns out that Chuck had a small stroke (probably a transient ischemic attack) and was being hospitalized to be monitored for 48 hours. He was scheduled to be released today but I'd like to enlist as many prayers for him as I can. Please pray that Pastor Chuck will recover expediently and that his family will be comforted and encouraged.

In Season or Out!

One thing you can always count on with Franklin Graham--when he opens his mouth the gospel comes out. It doesn't matter if the microphone is in a church or on the desk of Bill O'Reiley or from the studios of Al Jazeera, he will always vocalize the need for sinful humanity to repent and come to Jesus Christ. It's sort of like, "in his genes!" Like father, like son! Well this entire weekend Franklin is preaching at Calvary of Albuquerque and doing more of the same. This is a busy season for Franklin as he is winding up Operation Christmas Child, where 8.2 million shoe boxes will be collected and distributed to children around the world. I've had the opportunity of having Franklin speak here since the eighties (our friendship goes way back) and I love his unswerving commitment to the simple message of the gospel. Lots of rejoicing in heaven over those who responded this past weekend. Glory to God!

"The Things That I Didn't Plan"

Lenya and I had dinner last night with a friend and his wife that I met last year while I was teaching at the Cove on the Second Coming of Christ. Hank Cooper, a PhD and the "Starwars Defense Initiative" architect in the Reagan Administration is a strong believer and concerned citizen. Hank was personally picked by Ronald Reagan for that role and was often an adviser to the president. He is concerned about the current nuclear situation and international the players who are developing weapons--scary when you consider their worldview and political agendas. But Hank said something to me as we were discussing God's Providence and Sovereignty. "The best things that have happened to me in life were those things that I didn't plan". Now that's quite a statement from a top level strategist who's job it was to help plan and maintain the national defense of our country! But Hank and his wife Bobbye realize that we only know so much about God's workings in the current affairs of our world ("We know in part"--1Cor. 13) and that though we can (and should) plan, strategize and solve problems in life, that God is behind the scenes and there He directs all the scenes that He is behind! There are many things that have happened to Lenya and I that we never planned. But behind them all is an everlasting God who is working all things together for our highest good and His greatest glory! I've seen that truth play out time and time again and I am trusting God that He's still doing that. Thanks for the reminder, Hank!

View From the Top

I'm out of the country right now. Lenya and I are enjoying the spicy hospitality of our southern neighbors in Mexico. Baja California Sur in the official name of this fine extended peninsula of the west where the Sea of Cortez kisses the Pacific Ocean in blue resplendence. About 30 miles from the Airport at Cabo, Rod and Nedra Farley (wonderful in-laws by the way) have a time-share villa. This is the view--not bad, eh? From here we can look down on the quiet valley below and watch the hawks gain altitude as the sun makes its westward daily journey. From here we can see the fishing boats take their early jaunt out to the deep for their daily catch. But its more than the view for me. I've left my world down below for these 5 days. Not answering cell phone calls or planning meetings via email has been a most welcome break (not to mention a difficult discipline for me). Today, its all about the jet ski trip around the arches of Cortez. Tomorrow its all about the ATV ride with Rod in the morning. I get up early (only because I go to bed early here) and read my bible with a cup of Starbuck's robust brew. After a cup or two and a brief scripture reading and song with Rod, I get Lenya up with a cup of very "milked-down" coffee. We enjoy the morning breezes and then its off to a stringent workout of lunch or water activity (or both). See ya...I think I feel a swim coming on!

Mentoring!

Over the years I have mentored several young men for the ministry and
the joy has been second to none. I never realized how the mentoring
principle extends to some of the others of God's creation mad on the
6th day. Tonight I found out. Winston (the bigger, older and wiser of
the two) could swing Mack (the smaller and cuter one) over the fence
if he wanted to. Winston is very strong and can play hard. But he
seems to be mentoring the wee one in how to play tug of war. While we
are training Mack these days it's nice to have a little help from a
wiser member of the Canine world.

OK, unless you have a trained eye, this shot may not look like much, but this picture you're looking at is my future! This is my grandchild! How cool is that!? God has done it again! I've seen many an ultrasound image in my time and the only thing better was the one of my son, Nate (which I still have by the way...somewhere). Nate and Jane went to the Dr.'s office today for the exam and he sent my this picture via his iPhone. We've known about this for awhile, but NOW I can blab about it--and don't worry--I WILL! I am already devising ways to spoil this little or girl. Oh yeah! And I don't care what anyone will think or say. Gramps will lavish his love on this little one and will enjoy ever minute of it. Isn't life grand?

I've enjoyed reading it and I think you will too. Lee is a good friend of our ministry, and has been a great "sounding board" for me in ministry issues. I've been drawn to a book I've had a long time on my shelf--written in 1821 by Edward Bickersteth, clergyman of the Church of England, sent to Africa by the church Missionary Society, rector of the church at Watton and one of the early founders of the Evangelical Alliance. I love reading OLD books, as lots of you already know. This one is a classic. Perhaps one of the reasons I love it it because the style in which it is written demands the reader slow down and mentally chew on small bites. At any rate, it it renewing a love for prayer, to meaningfully communicate to the Father as His child. Bickersteth underscores that our apprach must not be as a slave towards a harsh and demanding master but in a familial and tender manner--great stuff--and it's really "Old School"--like 200 years old school!

I've visited his church building in London as well as his grave in East Norwood and will be stoked to actually meet him. (I also want to meet other preachers like G. Campbell Morgan, Joseph Parker, Alexander MacLaren & Richard Baxter)

I also can't wait for all those sweet surprises in heaven--those people that I knew in High School & college whom I never thought would become Christians but did anyway!

Not "HOW" but "WHAT?"

James spoke to a suffering group of believers when he wrote, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let Him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reporach, and it will be given to him,"(James 1:5) The point of the paragraph is that Christians shouldn't be asking God HOW they can get out of trials but rather WHAT they can get out of trials. That's what I have been praying these days. Suffering comes to us all in life, but God want to make sure that none of it ever gets wasted. He wants to use every bit of it--to shape, prune and beautify the lives of His children. I am excited about that. God will let nothing go to waste; He will use carefully prescribed seasons of suffering to make us better!

Now for the real issue about how Lenya is doing exactly! We went to the Dr. yesterday to get the low-down on the lab results and what he sees as the next steps. We really love Dr Ampuero. He is a gentleman and cares deeply about his patients. I'm praying the Lord will use us in his life as well. I'll let Lenya tell you the story in her own words:

"Every time Apple comes out with the latest, greatest gadget my guys jockey for position into long lines for the 'must have' upgrade. The iPhone rolls out a 3G and immediately they’re hooked up (I have to confess, I detest electronic devices at the dinner table. Grrrrrr!) It’s no wonder that most of us look at getting an upgrade as a good thing. We dream of a flight attendant calling our name over the loud speaker to say, 'We’re upgrading you to first class. Sorry we overbooked the flight.'

My grandest string of upgrades occurred during 1996 when the New York Yankees competed with the Atlanta Braves for the World Series. John Wetteland, the Yankees clean-up pitcher who led the American League with 43 saves, invited me and Nathan to come see an away game in Atlanta. Because we knew John, his name opened the door to untold opportunity wherever we went in Atlanta. It unlocked a hotel room at the Ritz Carlton after the Marriott overbooked our reservation—all expenses paid! Shopping with the team family members brought amazing discounts. It gained us entrance to the Yankee locker room and even provided seats on the team bus right next to Reggie Jackson. Nathan and I felt like we landed in a dream. And it was a dream come true!

Today I received an upgrade I could live without. I learned that my Stage 1 cancer was elevated to Stage 2. Yes, the pathology from my lymphs, omentum, colon, and abdominal fluid were all negative. On the positive side, it is not a clear cell carcinoma, which are notoriously virulent. Dr. Ampuero was astounded at how quickly I’m recovering from the surgery, saying, “You’re well ahead of schedule.” He added that youth and strength are on my side. However, since my hysterectomy in 1998, there’s no knowing if the peritoneal cancer originated elsewhere, like my ovaries or uterus. That and anything that impacts the colon brings unsolicited upgrades.

This Wednesday I have more blood work. On Thursday, I undergo a procedure to implant a “port” into my chest to receive the chemo. Next Tuesday, August 4th, I receive my first of six rounds of chemotherapy. The toxic cure will be a combo of Paclitaxel and Carboplatin. Most likely I’ll lose my hair, be fatigued, and have a compromised immune system until the first of the year.

On the average, the awesome upgrades I’ve received have far outweighed the aggravating ones. I will rest with Job on this thought, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21).

Lenya made it home! She's doing great. She had all her staples and cutaneous sutures removed yesterday and is at her computer already today. She is up walking and eating (though not usually at the same time), and she is getting stringer daily. Her mom has been a great help--flying in from Michigan and staying with her all six nights in the hospital and helping here around the house (A great mother-in-Law). Nights are a bit restless but even that is a chance for the Lord to speak to our hearts! We are greatly encouraged and firmly rooted in God grace right now. Thanks to the many who have written to add to that encouragement and to all who have been praying--you're the best!

Again a hearty thanks to all who have been praying and writing with notes of love & concern. First of all, I want to say that God is good ALL THE TIME! We know He is the One who is aquatinted with all our ways and hedges us with His love (Psalm 139:3-5), and is ultimately at the helm of every one of life's situations. Even those thing that mystify our understanding never catch Him off guard nor do they escape His gracious gaze.
Lenya's surgery this morning went a little longer than expected (about an hour or so overtime). I will try to be descriptive without too much medical jargon: The tumor was taken out. It was malignant. The Oncologist gave it the designation, "Stage 1", but because it was encapsulated, he was encouraged. This hopefully means it hasn't metastasized (hasn't spread to grow anywhere else), but it's too early to tell without the pathology reports (they normally come a few days later). The complication was it's adherence to other organs which precipitated the need for an anastomosis which was done successfully. As a follow-up, she will be needing chemotherapy as well. To sum it up: she has done remarkably well and the prognosis is positive. She is resting comfortably, dozing in and out, having short conversations and then sleeping. Even in a hospital bed without makeup, she is absolutely beautiful!
Her mom and dad, Nate and I have all been with her most of the late morning and afternoon. I am very encouraged and confident in God's plan for her and for us all. Thanks for standing with us in prayer. We love you all.

Surgery Day

We awoke this morning at 5 a.m. after a good night's rest and got
Lenya go the hospital at 6:15. All the pre-op procedures went great--a
wonderful staff here. I'm just sitting in the waiting room with family
awaiting the results. We've had SO many friends from all around town,
different states and countries calling, texting and emailing who are
praying for her--we're happily surrounded! The surgery team was alert
and confident and so we wait to hear how it all goes.

The family of fellow-believers, called the "church" is one of God's greatest gifts. "He sets the solitary in families" writes the psalmist in Psalm 68:6. Even with a flock of 14,000 people, there is still a warmth and intimacy that we experience especially in times like these. I am so thankful for this. I took Lenya today for a pre-op PA and lateral chest X-ray and EKG. The surgery has been moved up from 1:00 in the afternoon to 7:45 in the morning on Wednesday. (earlier is better than later). The rest of today we're resting but we're resting gratefully to be so bathed in prayer and support. Besides salvation, Lenya is the BEST thing that ever happened to me! Thanks to all who have written and voiced their prayers and love both here, on Facebook and in person.

The rain this morning reminded me of God's faithfulness to provide. (Isa 55:9-11) We're doing well and are set for this unplanned journey. After setting a date for Lenya's surgery, we are now focused on the operation and recovery. I'll let Lenya tell you in her own words:

"Good Morning,

Thank you for you words or encouragement and prayers. I have had incredible peace throughout the whole discovery process. Skip has been an angel...barely leaving my side. The Dr.s have been strong advocates on our behalf. To have nearly a dozen test in 4 days...incredible! Also, to move from discovery to diagnosis in a week's time is amazing. I have every confidence in their care. More importantly, I trust the Great Physician with my life!

I have a couple of pre-op tests on Monday. I have a colonoscopy on Tuesday. My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday 7/8 at 1 PM. Dr. Francisco Ampuero GYN/ONC will perform the procedure. It is a small, highly professional facility. I will have a private room and top notch care.

The surgery will require a vertical incision from my belly button to my pubic bone. The mass is so large that it displaces several vital organs. Therefore, they need to open my abdomen wide enough to pull it out in tact and without compromising adjacent organs. Doctors say that the good news is that the tumor is encapsulated. It hasn't adhered to other organs, rather it imposes upon them. It is a consistent density. And it has not created fluid in the pelvic area. The even better news? My surgeon called me "thin with almost no belly fat!" He's now my new best friend.

My mother is flying in on Tuesday. They say I will need someone at the house for 2 weeks to help out. She'll be here for the entire time. Recovery time is expected to be 2-3 months.

I Would Love to Have Your Prayers

It's been quite a busy and eventful week at our home and I wanted to let everyone know what is going on in our personal lives. Lenya has been feeling quite a lot of pain lately (and believe me Lenya doesn't let on much when it comes to pain--she just plows ahead). So here's the run-down:

Monday: Lenya's Ob Gyn detected a pelvic mass upon examination. An ultrasound exam confirmed a 15cm mass present (the size of a large grapefruit)

Tuesday: Blood tests and a pelvic CT scan revealed that the mass is encapsulated(a good thing) but displacing other organs in the area.

Wednesday: CT scan of the lungs was done along with more blood tests. These showed an elevation of cancer cells in the bloodstream.

Thursday: We meet today with a GYN Oncologist to assemble a surgical team and schedule the removal of the mass.

The Heitzigs are really doing great. We have complete peace from God and are thankful for the way God sustains us. Honestly, we feel so blessed to have each other and with God's strength we'll march through this battle like we have other before it. God bless you.

A Great Night of Jubilee

Myself, Josh McDowell, Sean McDowell and my son Nate.

I've know Josh McDowell for many years now. He's been a great influence to my Christian walk since almost the very beginning. He wrote "More than a Carpenter" and "Evidence That Demands a Verdict", two of the best books ever written. Josh and his family were a part of the church in California, when I was the pastor. We had the pleasure of having his family (He, his wife and their son Sean) speak out there about family life. But this week we hosted them here in New Mexico. Josh and Sean came out to be part of our Bible Literacy Study and to kick off the Jubilee Festival along with Jars of Clay. Sean, who has written a couple of great books ("Understanding Intelligent Design" and "Apologetics For A New Generation")shared, along with my son Nate, the importance of Bible literacy for this generation while Josh & I spoke as the older guys to a small press conference on Friday at Hotel Albuquerque. We conducted a poll to indicate the level of Bible literacy in this city--a study Josh praised--since he's one who loves hard research and had conducted a number of similar studies himself. Both father and son McDowell shared the stage at the Balloon Fiesta Park to speak about the relevance of truth to their own lives--a powerful night!

Praying for Wisdom

I was struck by reading the account of Solomon's prayer in 2 Chronicles 1. Before Solomon built the great Temple and while the tabernacle still stood, Solomon gathered the leaders of the nation and together they prayed. There at Gibeon, after making an extensive sacrifice, Solomon was effectively given a "blank check" by God. He was told to ask for anything he wanted. It's what Solomon wanted that is to me most significant--he desired "Wisdom and knowledge" ("an understanding heart" in the 1 Kings account) to know how to serve God people. I have always loved Solomon's request and have echoed his prayer many times for myself, asking for God's wisdom and knowledge in shepherding His flock. I did so again this morning. I have always realized that the flock belongs to God and my task is to feed and nurture, equipping them through the knowledge of the truth (Acts 20:28). Solomon had the right focus at the beginning of his reign but as time wore on, he lost sight of it--a warning to all believers, especially to leaders that our hearts must be carefully guarded and motives constantly weighed. Shepherding God's flock is the greatest privilege in the world but it also demands the highest degree of integrity and purest of motives. "God, please grant that for your church."

OK, last night was a BLAST! I mean it was an epic combination of music and ministry as two of my dear friends came and shared their songs. Paul Clark and Phil Keaggy were at Calvary and delighted us. Thats the best way I can describe it. It was like a gift for our church body. The led in worship, helped with Communion and then played for the rest of the night. If you missed it, I'm really sorry because it was one of the most memorable nights ever.

Paul Clark and I have traveled the world together doing ministry from Jerusalem to Istanbul. He has been a musical troubadour, writing, singing and producing with some of the most capable musicians in the industry. We've been friends since way back! Phil Keaggy has been widely knwn as one of the planets best guitar players, yet he remains so sweet and humble, because he knws where his gift comes from!

These guys gave to our generation some of the most memorable Christian anthems like, "Abide" and "Love Broke Through" both of which were played last evening. To top it all off, the band joined them on stage for Paul's rendition of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody." So cool! And so fun!

Mother's Day

I have so many fond memories of my mom. One of the greatest is her wonderful attitude and love for the simple things in life. A warm day with sunshine, working in her garden and a call from one of her boys was all she needed to beam. She was so encouraging to be around her and she loved to laugh! She also exuded a zest for life that was contagious. I miss her, but I know she's eally having a great Mother's Day with the Lord.

This Mother's Day at Calvary of Albuquerque we had Crystal Lewis, a mother of two teenagers. She shared stories, music, and her heart with those who attended.

As I continue my series on the Church, I am so glad to be part of this fellowship (Calvary of Albuquerque)- a place where people gather to worship God, study His word, and love one another. This family of believers genuinely and authentically follow Christ.

OK, so I haven't blogged for a while. With all of the busyness of normal life in the life of a pastor (people worried over the economy and the Swine Flu)and just the accelerated pace of postmodern technology between doing Facebook, the blog, Loopt, and just "regular" emails and website requests, life is CRAZY! So why am I blogging now? Perhaps out of guilt for not doing it awhile and perhaps because I have just a few quiet moments on my one day off to just say I love the space between the busyness. Today is what I would consider a perfect day. The weather is calm and warm, the outside air beckoned me to go out and poke around at yard work (a love I inherited from my mother)and I can now bicycle somewhere cool with Lenya. Ahhhh!

Tonight I will be teaching through three books of the New Testament: 2 John, 3 John and Jude (Don't worry, they are only three chapters total--very short books). The Bible from 30,000 Feet is nearly over and the plane will and is just a couple of weeks. next week we will tackle half of the Book of Revelation. Tonight's message will really be fun. I've learned a lot reading through these short but powerful letters. I've learned a powerful lesson in 2 John: True Love Requires Love For Truth! I'll explain tonight!

God Uses Dentists Too

I had to go to the dentist today--just for a checkup. This was new guy for me and he turned out to be one of the kindest, nicest guys I've ever met. He is a strong
believer who radiates joy and clearly wants to make his patients feel
comfortable(and I did). It may be hard to believe but as I am leaving his office
I feel edified and peaceful. Yep, God uses dentists too!

I have loved London since I was a kid. This was the country that produced the Beatles and Vox amplifiers. This was the land that was the springboard for the United States of America and also has a cool-looking flag! London is a mix of both old and new--old-world architecture and new world fashion and attitude. Moreover this is also the country that produced some of the finest preachers EVER, some of my heroes. Today we visited two churches and the houses of Parliament for film shoots. Again the weather was very warm for London--mid to upper sixties and bright clear skies. Ahhhhh!!!!!! It was nice. My buddy John Ritchie from Scotland and I had the chance in between video set-ups to go out and visit Charles Spurgeon's grave at the East Norwood cemetary in Southeast London. I've always wanted to do it, so this was an added treat. So to visit his church, stand in his pulpit and then visit his grave was lots of fun and very inspiring. I have been reading Spurgeon since I was 18. Then we went over to Westminster Chapel for a shoot for our upcoming documentary. This was the church that G. Campbell Morgan and D. Martyn Lloyd Jones pastored and preached in, gracing London with a solid model of in-depth expository preaching. So, all in all it was a wonderful day. Going to bed now--taking an early morning flight back home. Tell me what you think of these pics.

That's how I can describe the balmy air of London tonight. After cold temps in Vienna, the weather started to warm up in Milstaat Austria (up in the alps). This castle was used by the Nazis during WWII to train SS officers for Hitler's war machine. This picturesque setting on the lake next to the town is like something out of the sound of music. Even though the altitude was higher, the wind stopped and the sun was bright. Its was ideal for the video clips we needed to show this Calvary Chapel Bible college in Austria. After a morning filming session, we made our way to Salzburg and then off to London where the weather is, get this, SUNNY! Tomorrow we'll shoot in front of what was CHarle Spurgeon's church, the Metropolitan Tabernacle, G. Campbell Morgan's church at Westminster Chapel and the Hyde Park. Back to the Home of My Forefathers

Austria was where my forebears lived before migrating to America. I've been here before but it wasn't so cold then. Today we battled rain and wind as we set up shots for a few different projects including one called, "Riptide" which I'll tell you more about over time. The gist of it is about the impact of the modern church movement of the "Jesus people" and their impact on culture. We needed a few segments here so we were able to set up in front of the Belvadere with the help of a combined film crew from the states and locally from Vienna. This was the home of Mozart, Strauss and others who graced the world with their creative talent. Tomorrow after a morning shoot we'll be off to Milstaat, the home of one of the bible colleges we'll feature.

I know it's crazy but they encourage you to beep your horn--everywhere, all day long!

Well the change from the hundred degree wet jungles of south India to the windy hail of Vienna is dramatic as is the cultural change. Just landed in Austria for a couple of days of ministry here. I've always loved Vienna since my family heritage is from this country. But great memories still linger of the brothers and sisters I met or re-connected with while staying in India. I was greatly encouraged. I'll post pictures of this location tomorrow. 'Til then, here's a few more pictures of where I've been. According to an early tradition, Thomas, one of the twelve apostles came to India to bring the gospel and preached in the area as seen in the photos below. So there you have it. Anybody out there reading this?

Fresh coconut milk for lunch

Leaders from all over Asia have gathered to take part in meetings for encouragement and refreshment. I spoke to this fine group earlier today. They ate it up--attentive and excited to serve in their areas. A few notable people like the leader from Nepal who has been under intense restriction and government pressure until lately was there. He oversees several hundred churches in that country. Also the bishop from the state of Orissa was there. Hundreds of churches there have been burned to the ground, believers have been killed and the persecution is mounting. I can't tell you what a privilege to stand with such men, some of whom I've known and spoken to for almost the last thirty years. On Sunday evening, a packed auditorium of over 3000 family and friends watched as students graduated from the Seminary here. I gave the keynote and was honored with a Doctorate in Divinity by this prestigious university. I felt very humbled to receive it. Tomorrow we will make our long trip back to Delhi and then we're off to Austria for a few days to film our next documentary project. This week has been hot and very busy but so rewarding. I love coming to India for a perspective "tune up."

Right now I'm in a village known as Thiruvala in south India. It is very tropical and very hot. The temps hover around 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity is close to the same. Even the folks who live here think its hot! Today I taught the students at GFA's seminary. This is one of the largest in Asia and is a fully accredited seminary in India. Tomorrow is graduation day and I will have the privilege of conducting the Sunday morning service here for the community and then give the graduation commencement address in the afternoon. We expect a crowd of 3000 to attend both of these. The quality of training here is top notch and I am always humbled by the level of commitment to Christ and the Great Commission. I have been working with KP Yohannan and Gospel for Asia since the early 80's and KP and I have really been ministry partners, since we both began around the same time. The seminary asked me to present a paper on a theological topic and they confer a doctorate on me tomorrow as well. To have such a degree from this particular school is a great honor to me as I feel such a kindred heart with the workers here.

Second Day in India

Its hard to convey what India is like to the Western mind. Someone aptly put it like this, "India is an assault on all of your senses." That pretty accurate. Every sense (what you hear, see, taste and feel) is so different that it must be experienced. I write this on Friday morning, March 6th while it is still Thursday in the West. I am getting ready to teach at the GFA headquarters in Delhi before flying southward to Cochin. The staff workers here are so sweet and so devoted to their calling and this is always a privilege for me. Since I first came to this country back in 1983, I have had a love for the people here, especially those who serve the Lord in these difficult circumstances. Yesterday was a long day of traveling and filming for a couple of different projects. A few photographs tell part of the story.

A Day Spent in Delhi

There's a twelve and a half hour time difference between where I live and where I am right now(where the half hour comes in I have no idea). I am feeling the time shift and jet lag right about now as I conclude this first day spent in and around the environs of Delhi, the seat of government for India. It was here the Mogul Kings fought and it was here the British Empire retained its grip of control over the commonwealth of India. But more exciting than it's history is the vibrant present day work among believers in this land. Our team woke up to a bright day filled with car horns beeping, bicycles and rickshaws dancing, cows meandering and trucks bullying there way through the same crowded streets of this town of 14 million people. We traveled about an hour from GFA offices to the Bible college to speak to over 200 students as well as missionaries that work with Gospel for Asia. When we arrived, they made a procession complete with dancing and singing a song of welcome. (See picture above). They all sat perfectly still for a few straight hours and seemed to not to just endure but enjoy the teachings. The school sits on 32 acres and includes a few acres of farmland. Afterward we visited two schools where children are rescued from off the streets and slums of India (usually from an abusive situation by drug pimps) and cared for, educated and taught the gospel. Its quite impressive to think that a total of 53,000 of these children so far have been removed from the streets and brought into these havens. A great work and a great day!

Just Landed...in Delhi!

After a 3 hour flight to Chicago and another 15.5 hour flight to Delhi, we're safely on Indian soil. A moderate drive from the airport brought us safely to GFA headquarters. It's midnight here and we'll be up pretty early to go the the bible school to teach the 200 students about leadership and being sustained in ministry. I've got help (Gino Geraci and Chip Lusko) so they'll be teaching as well. Going to try to get some rest now and if the connection works tomorrow, I'll post with some pictures of the day.

I'm at the airport traveling with Chip Lusko to India (Chip is in the
photo getting his shots for travel--he had to get four injections to prevent a host of diseases). We'll be going to Delhi for a few
days and then down south to teach at GFA's seminary. KP Yohannan began Gospel for Asia just about a year before we began Calvary of Albuquerque and we have partnered together for many years. I am privileged to serve on the Board of GFA and every few years I travel to India to speak to leaders, pastors and students at the bible schools there. This year will be a particular honor as The Biblical Seminary in south India will be conferring a doctorate to me. This will be alot of fun. We will also be filming while we are there for an upcoming documentary that I will tell you more about later.

Before looking at the falsehood of Uniformitarianism, we interviewed a monkey (Ken Riley dressed as a monkey) as he informed is that Darwin had it all wrong and would today have re-instated prayer in school.. Ancient Treasure--FOUND!

A few of us just finished a very cool project. Its a documentary we worked last time we were in Israel about The Jesus Boat. Ever heard of it? It was one of the funnest film projects I had the privilege of doing. The documentary (to be released shortly) was featured this past weekend where I spoke at Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California.

But this was way more than a documentary about an ancient boat. It’s really a testimony to the faithfulness of God. Through the film we paralleled the story of a lost boat and a lost nation (Israel) both of which were "resurrected" after two thousand years. Its the story about a boat that wouldn't stay buried in a land that couldn't stay buried!

Just like the boat was under the shores for 2,000 years, the land of Israel was submerged – virtually not a nation – a dispersed people group. And, against all odds, they re-emerged in 1948. Just like Ezekiel predicted, there would be a re-gathering of Jews from the four corners of the world into that ancient piece of Real Estate. It would seem as impossible as dried bones, bleached and parched under the Middle Eastern sun coming to life again(Ezekiel 36-37).

And yet it happened – 1948, the re-establishment of the nation. And why? Because God made promises to Abraham: ‘I’ll bless you, I’ll make you a great nation, your name will be great, I’ll bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you."(Gen 12:1-3)

Its About Time!

Amazing! Unexpected! Shocking! Most never thought it would happen, but it did. Jean Luc Lajoie finally got married! Jean Luc was the lead singer from the band "The Kry" that was very popular in the 1990s in Christian music. I remember the night the he walked forward at Calvary of Albuquerque and prayed to receive Jesus Christ. As a young musician traveling around the states and the world, there were always young Christian girls who were certain it was God's will for them to marry him. But Jean Luc wouldn't be deterred. The girl who finally stole his heart was Jacque Garcia, a beautiful princess from Ontario, California. Jean Luc called my in November and asked me to perform the Ceremony. "Skip, you were the one who led me to Christ," he said, "and I always thought that when I got married, you would do the service." Yesterday at 5PM (more like 5:45Pm due to a late start) it was done at the North Chapel at Liberty Station in San Diego. Jean Luc is 44 and he has gotten a package deal, not only acquiring a beautiful young wife, but a handsome 4 y/o son named Tyler! Congratulations buddy boy!

Yes! Yes! Yes! In fact the love grows, and with each passing year we feel more at ease and more content than ever! Which leads me to a story: Right before the New Year, Lenya and I went to Billy Graham's 90th birthday party back East. I spoke the next night to his staff and board. The next day, Lenya took a plane to New York City (one of our favorite places to hang) for a brief visit.

What a great time! We walked around, took pictures, ate, took in a Broadway show, ate some more, held hands, and ate a bit more.

Based upon the recommendation of my friends Greg and Cathe Laurie, we went down to SoHo to a little restaurant called Mercer St. Café. Purported to have great food. We walked inside to a cozy and hip (and packed) cafe. All the seats were taken expect a little "corner seat" in the lower level (the basement).

Sitting there in that little spot, alone with my wife I realized, "This is all I need and there's no place I'd rather be than next to her." I said something to the effect that being there in that basement seat down at the Mercer Street Cafe was sheer contentment, and then I immediately thought, "There's a song in that!

So, when I got back home to Albuquerque, I started writing the words and melody that became a special edition CD entitled, The Royal Road of Love. My close friend and musical partner, Kenny Riley, recorded it just in time for a Valentines release. We're trying to compose original songs for every season of the year. The first was the Christmas CD project and this Valentins Day marks the second.

The video will give you glimpse into the recording process, with all the fun fellow musicians can have working on a recording. Enjoy it and around Valentines Day look for the special edition CD. (BTW February, for you GUYS, Valentines Day is February 14).

A New Year: God is with You

Wow! What a year. I mean that. It was a wild, crazy year. Think of it: the economic crisis, a historic election, financial bailouts, more California fires, heavy winter storms, and to end the year- a new confrontation in Israel.

Yet through all the hardship and trials, God promises to be with His people.

I recently taught from Psalm 139: 7-12 at Calvary of Albuquerque. In this message, I spoke on the omnipresence of God (God is ever present). I concluded the message by looking at three conclusions one can draw from this passage in the book of Psalms. One, death can’t separate us from God. Two, distance can’t separate us from God. Three, darkness can’t separate us from God.

This past year we saw a lot of death through wars, natural disasters, and the like. Some people may have even tried to distance themselves from God. And even more people have seen dark times: 401K are loosing ground, lost jobs, home foreclosures, and such.

But the good news for the believer, even in difficult times, is that God is with you; He is guiding you, and leading you closer to him.

So here we are at the beginning of a new year; a time to look forward to what the Lord has in store for each of us, to trust Him more, and to wait for Him in all things.

And remember through all this: God is with you. He loves you, and yearns for a deeper, more fulfilling life with Him. So trust the Lord this year as never before

New Year's Service

We even had a crazy year here at Calvary. I mean “crazy” in a good sense. It was quite a year. As you will see in this short video, we had many of my friends speak: Lee Strobel, Greg Laurie, Franklin Graham, Time Lahaye, and others.

We also had a fun time at the New Year’s service, itself. As you will see in the video we had a mariachi band, a gospel band, called Voices of Purpose, and communion together. It was a wonderful time.

Now we look forward to what the Lord is going to do in the upcoming year.

I can’t wait!

Christmas Staff Party

We have the best staff at Calvary of Albuquerque! Really, we do. They are fun, loving, and godly. They love to serve the Lord and are a blessing to the body here at the Church.

So it is always a pleasure to have some fun with them. This past week we had our annual Christmas Staff Party. It was a hoot.

The food, provided by Yanni’s, was tremendous; the fellowship, grand; and the chocolate eating contest, gross! But you can’t win them all.

We even had those two guys- Joey and Stevo- from the TV show, U Rock, Albuquerque (ok, both work here, but they were here non-the-less).

In between all this, we had a roadrunner show up (only in New Mexico), and a recycled lamb tale (just watch).

Christmas Cheer with our Family

We had a really great time this Christmas. After all three Christmas Eve services, Nate and Jane and Lenya and I went up to Santa Fe. Its become our annual tradition. We love to walk among the crowds, singing Christmas carols at the bonfires on Canyon Road. This year there were not only thousands of luminarias and lights but about a foot of snow on the ground which made it the perfect Christmas Eve. With cups of hot chocolate and apple cider we walked and sang our way up the streets and arrived back home around midnight.
The following day, I read the Scriptures afresh about the wonderful event we celebrate (Jesus' Incarnation) and cooked waffles for everyone. After a short afternoon spin on the '42, we all went over to Rod and Nedra's house (Lenya's dad) and celebrated with the perfect New Mexico meal (turkey and Stephanie's amazing red chili smothered over the top. Here's a few scenes around the table. I want to personally wish you all a joy-filled Christmas season, packed full of laughter and brimming with God's peace.

The Weekend Before Christmas

Clement Clark Moore (1779-1863) wrote the famous poem, A Visit From St. Nicholas (otherwise known as The Night Before Christmas), in 1837.

As you may recall, the poem tells of a quiet night in a home on Christmas Eve.

Well, as you will see in this short video, our Weekend Before Christmas is not as quiet…things are stirring.

We are bustling with activity, special guests, and holiday cheer.

My good friend John Privitt is with us singing, Christmas Light, a song he wrote and performed for a tour I hosted in Bethlehem.

John just returned from Nashville where he was a songwriter (working with Willy Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and others). He came back to Albuquerque to be close to his family.

Also this weekend we had the lead singer, Jason Tolliver, from the rock group, Ives. Jason sang a the song, Welcome Home. Welcome Home is on the newly released Christmas album, As Stars Shine Bright, released this winter by the Connection.

Sit back and enjoy the host of characters that minister here at Calvary, making this a wonderful place to be at all times, but especially during the holidays.

OK, I know I’ve posted a couple of “behind-the-scenes” the last week or so, but here’s some fun we had getting ready and doing the Saturday night service. We love Saturday nights because we don’t have to rush through it; we can have a full half an hour of singing and we can linger, not worrying about congestion or traffic flow, like we do on Sunday mornings. Also After Saturday night in the worship center, I walk over to the radio station and for an hour we are able to discuss what we studied with those in the community and internet who’d like to call or write in and discuss the topics further.

This week, our very good friend Fernando Ortega stopped by and sang for us. And guess what, he’s a dad now. Just 9 days ago he (and especially his wife, Margee) gave birth to a cute baby girl, Ruby (I saw the pictures—she’s really a beautiful baby).

So, here we all are, backstage, in my office and on the radio on Saturday night with a host of characters that bring cheer to each of my weekends.

A Night in the Life

I love being a pastor. Seriously, it’s the coolest thing I’ve ever done. I get to teach the Bible, and I LOVE being part of what I think is the greatest church of all time—Calvary of Albuquerque.

And those of us who work at the church have a lot of fun! Before, during and after services are busy but always happy. I’ll show you what I mean.

Here’s a short video we put together, a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on. It’s a night in the life of a Wednesday evening service here at Calvary. It was recorded on a tiny little pocket video recorder called a Flip (handheld) camera. So what you see is what you get!

It begins as we are making pre-service arrangements, and ends with greeting the Billy Graham phone ministry workers. In between I interview singer, Marty Getz, teach, meet with some children, and have blast with some of our great staff members!

The Greatest Church I Know Of

I love Jesus' whole idea of "the church"--calling people out of the world to be together to love and serve Him together. I have traveled to so many places and have seen, heard and experienced so many congregations--most very good, some great and inspiring, but none so great as the congregation I am privileged to serve in--Calvary of Albuquerque. I realize this is just my opinion--the bias opinion of one man in one place. I suppose being under the weather the last few days has got me thinking a bit about this. I have been reading and re-reading Paul's letter to the Colossians for the past few weeks, to really get it under my belt. As I was reading along, I came to two verses that beautifully pictured the church at Colosse and describes the church at Albuquerque. In chapter one, "...The truth of the gospel which has come to you, as it has in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit..." (Col. 1:5-6), and in chapter two, "rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving." (Col. 2:7). The wonderful thing about our fellowship is the constant growth and fruit. Every project, whether to the poor of the community or to the nations of the world or to the kids in Sunday School, people step up and give themselves to help, to serve and to support--this is the fruit of a healthy church. I hate it when I am unable to be there--like this weekend (resting at home and hoping to feel better), and I love especially the chance to talk with folks before and after each service and throughout the week all over town and hear what God is doing with them.

The pictures in this post below depict both the "root" and the "fruit", the past and the present. The first shot above was taken in the early 1970's when I was attending Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa. This is the tent we met in while our building was being constructed. Here is where I got my roots, where I became, "rooted and built up in Him." The second shot below is from our last 4th of July--this is the "fruit" of God's work through the years. I feel like the most blessed man on the face of the earth to have seen both and to experience the love and joy at Calvary of Albuquerque.

Rebel With a Cause

This weekend at Calvary was packed again as we listened to Franklin Graham preach it up. I have watched this man up close for many years. He LOVES to preach the gospel and he never has wavered from its truth. Since Franklin was young, he's had the streak of a rebel in him but now that streak has been harnessed for the right cause. Like his father, Franklin knows that real change can only take place when a heart is changed by Christ's forgiveness. That's what he believes and thats what he preaches; and whether he's speaking to a church or to Larry King, he never compromises. Franklin and his family have been close friends for years and he loves to come to speak to the wonderful people at Calvary of Albuquerque and we love him back. Jon and Annie Barbour sang at all four services this weekend before Franklin spoke. It was just so great to see so many make commitments to Christ.

"Now Thank We All Our God"

I grew up hearing and singing a song this time of year. It was a song written in 1637 by a German composer, Martin Rinkhardht. He wrote it during the devastating time in his country known as "The Thirty Years War" and during an equally devastating time in his own personal life. During that year six thousand perished from his own village due to an outbreak of pestilence. This included the deaths of his own wife and children. Yet he wrote a song of thanksgiving. The lyrics I recall are these, "Now thank we all our God, with hearts and hand and voices; WHo wondrous things hath done, in Whom the world rejoices." What a testimony of a godly man to the faithfulness of God to sustain a life.
Tonight a church we had our Thanksgiving service. The church was packed and filled with joyful, thankful people. I love my spiritual family at Calvary of Albuquerque. There's no better group of folks I know of. They have sacrificed willingly to reach out to their community and to the world in so many ways and I'm honored to serve there. Tonight many brought their banners of thanksgiving and marched through the church so we could all read what they were thankful for. The one banner that would win for "Most Unique" was one sweet little girl thanking God for her five pet rats. (Yikes!) Loads of fun (and great pie afterwards!

The Bible

Obviously I love the Bible. I love to read it, teach it and watch as its truths transform lives. I hear reports every week of this happening. They never get old. I never tire of hearing how God is using the teaching of His Word to build people up. The picture above is of Billy Graham's preaching Bible that he used in many of his crusades. I think of the lives that have been reached as God's servant preached from this book! But as a pastor I recognize that there's a whole lot more to it than just the initial proclamation that brings men and women to Christ. I was reading this morning in Colossians 1 the words of Paul, "Whom (Christ) we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Whereunto I also labor, striving according to His working, which works in me mightily." (Col. 1:28-29) This truth is where I spend most of my life and my time. My life's goal could be summed up in these two verses. The reason I spend hours studying and laboring over His Word is so that I can be equipped to both "preach" and "teach", winning men and women to Christ and then instructing them towards maturity. When I read these two verses this morning they rekindled in me a renewed sense of purpose. I LOVE what I get to do as a pastor!

As Stars Shine Bright

I invite you to watch this mini documentary of a new song I co-wrote called Gloria Exaltus. It is a Christmas hymn based upon Philippians 2, the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

My friends, Kenny Riley and Brian Nixon, helped pull this very cool project together. You'll notice that the song is different from most modern songs--IT"S GOT AN ORCHESTRA! Actually it's the New Life Symphony Orchestra Southwest, conducted by Michael Bowen (an excellent group of local classical musicians). Also we feature a choir to add vocal power and an anthem-like feel(They're called Voices of Promise). The song features the very sweet lead vocals of Chrissy Jeter, from the rock group, The Echoing Green.

I really enjoyed the whole process, from writing to recording. There was so much fun in creating this thing. I hope you are blessed by the song as well.

The song is on a brand new CD set called, As Stars Shine Bright- a compilation Christmas CD put out by The Connection. We wanted to get it out by Christmas since it features some old traditional songs as well as a few new ones especially fitting for the Christmas Season.

Billy Graham's 90th Birthday Party!

I've had the great privilege of knowing the Graham family for many years. I remember the first time Franklin took me to his parents' home for supper to meet his mom and dad. I remember how sweet they both were and genuinely interested in the ministry at Calvary of Albuquerque. I also remember that Billy and Ruth would come to the Cove sometimes when I'd speak there. I've attended many of Billy crusades over the years and I came to Christ by watching one on television in 1973. Now Billy has turned 90 on November 7th and we celebrated it last night. Friends and family gathered to express our thankfulness for his life and influence. He isn't just a great man; Billy Graham is a godly man and a man who has been used by God. He remains humble and grateful for all that God has done, and especially what God has done for him personally. These little video clips I shot last night with my tiny little flip camera. There were some touching moments when a good friend of Billy, radio icon Paul Harvey, came to greet Billy at his birthday dinner. It was a tender time. Enjoy.

The Evolution of the Banana

My friend Greg Laurie is really quite an artist and can draw almost anything--even me. For years Greg has done a little sketch he calls, "The Evolution of the Banana." Its a set of drawings of a banana slowly evolving into my head. Since I have a long face and Greg likes to make his drawing caricatures based on people's prominent features, it quite humorous. So over lunch today in West Virginia Greg performed his artistry magic for a few friends, as you'll see on this little video.

I just flew into Roanoke, VIrginia tonight and drove an hour and a half to White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia for some meetings over the next few days. The boards and staffs of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse are convening for annual board meetings and staff encouragement. Christian leaders from around the world that have been part of this organization are here for a special occasion. Tomorrow night will be a special birthday gathering for Dr. Graham to celebrate his 90th birthday! How cool is that! So many have been touched by his preaching and come to Christ through his life (myself included). I give the keynote address on Friday night and my good friend Sami Dagher from Beirut, Lebanon will share on Saturday night. Joe Stowell gives devotions all three days. I just love working with this team and always come away with renewed vision. I will thank Dr. Graham personally for being faithful to carry the torch of the truth of the gospel for all these years and for the strong example of how to "finish well!"

Mongolia is more than a Barbeque!

Today I went to eat Mongolian Barbeque with my friend, Tom Terry and his family. They actually live in Mongolia (no joke) and speak the language and know the culture. Tom's ministry is to operate a large television station that reaches throughout the country. Just for fun we went to Gengis Grill--really great chow. We've been praying through this past six months about starting churches in that country and about family in particular that is thinking about moving from Albuquerque to go there, spend two years just to learn the language and get sensitized to the culture and then plant a Calvary Chapel there. Its out dream to see a network of many church begin there, a school of ministry and eventually a series of pastors and leaders conferences. Pretty exciting stuff. We love to dream about, "What if God would allow us to see something really great there. BTW, the picture is not Tom, just a cool looking Mongol.

Sunday Afternoons

One of my favorite times of the week is after church on Sunday when I can chill out and enjoy my family. With a picture-perfect Fall day, resplendent with falling leaves in the New Mexico Bosque, Lenya and I took our Airedale Terrier Winston out for a nice walk. The Rio Grande river is chock full of trailheads and paths that wind their way next to the water. While Nate and Janae are away for a few more days in Costa Rica, we're just relaxing and enjoying each other.

My son's wedding yesterday couldn't have gone better. It was so beautiful and I blubbered like a baby through most of the ceremony. Janae was the MOST beautiful bride ever. She was radiant and Nate was so handsome. I've done hundreds of weddings through the years but being "on the other end" of the wedding ceremony felt quite different. I was remembering back to November 1986 standing on that very spot dedicating Nathan Alexander to the Lord and praying for all the steps he would take in days to come. There, on the very place he was dedicated, we were watching our prayers being answered as he stepped onto the platform and joined Janae in marriage. I wish we could have invited everyone to the ceremony but it would have just been impossible. We were able to webcast it on the CalvaryABQ.org website.

OK, I may be going overboard, but it's my one and only son's wedding, so I'm going a bit camera crazy. I've both 2 digital still cameras and this little HD video camera as well so I think I'm covered here. We're at the tux shop getting Nate fitted for his big day tomorrow. This is really a lot of fun. Friends and family all gathering together to witness the "covenant bond" between Natahn Heitzig and Janae Chapin--awesome!

Its hard for me to realize that time has gone so fast--seriously! Its been almost elusive actually. Nate was just a toddler the other day running around with his "doggy bear" up and down the steps at the church. He was selling his "beenie babies" out by the old cafe (now the prayer room), and hiding inside the pulpit and underneath the stage after services. I remember him as Indianna Jones, Spiderman and the coolest cowboy you've ever met (he always loved to play dress-up). I recall those favorite times of ours with, "Say, Play and Pray" as we would all act out a bible story. But now Nate is all grown up. Now he is a gifted youth pastor teaching high schoolers and getting married--tomorrow! Man, it seems crazy! But Nate has turned out to be so wise and determined. He knew what he wanted and he went after it. "He who finds a wife finds something good" (Prov. 18:22) and he found a great wife in Janae Chapin. She is so fun and happy and brings the very best out of Nate. I'm proud of both of them and even though they are great people individually, I can truly say that they are better together than they even are apart. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Friendly Fire and Buffalo Wings

Last night a few of Nate's friends got together for his "bachelor party". Yep, he's getting married on Sunday afternoon and so a friendly game of paintball wars was in order. Two teams of us went at each other with these high-powered paintball rifles (man, those little orbs can hurt!) From Left to Right in the above picture is Levi Lusko, Dave Row, Rick Chapin, me, Drew Newman, Nate, Daniel Lusko and Kevin Miller. I know--we all look like convicts from the local prison in our jumpsuits, but hey, its better than getting whacked with wet green pain all over your clothes! Afterwards we went out and ate chicken wings per Nate's request, had a spot of evening coffee and then prayed for Nate and Janae's marriage and lives together. Great times, though its hard for me to believe that he grew up so quickly.

Crusade in Taipei, Taiwan

A year ago I was in Hong Kong with Franklin Graham for one the the largest crusades ever. We had to use overflow venues throughout the city to accommodate the crowds that were coming each night. My job was to preach at the altar call time in these venues and personalize the appeal to come to follow Christ. Heres a couple of shots sent to me today from a Billy Graham crusade director. This next week Franklin Graham will be in Taipei, Taiwan for a crusade there. Please pray for him. I obviously won't be there since I have a very special wedding to officiate--my son, Nate and his bride-to-be, Janae.

Faithful!

Reading through Colossians this morning and something struck me right off the bat. Paul addressed his thoughts, "To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse." That little phrase "and faithful brethren" caught my eye. There are saints (every believers according to the New Testament is given this title) and then there are those "faithful brethren" who are among them, but are distinguished from them. What could this linguistic distinction refer to? Simply that there's a difference between one who believes in Christ and one who belongs to Christ's cause; there are many who consent to being a follower of Jesus, but then there are a few who are committed to becoming mature, discipling others and spreading His Kingdom. There faithful ones are pretty easy to recognize and they are a delight to be around. I'm blessed that I have the privilege to work around and fellowship with a whole bunch of these folks. I walk by their offices at church daily. I pass through the prayer room after services and see them praying and counseling. They're passing out bulletins or holding the door open for folks or even directing traffic and helping out with security. Moreover I run into faithful brethren all around town, whose face beams the love of Christ and who love to talk about the Lord. I live a blessed life because of the presence of many faithful followers of our great God and Savior.

Lt. General Jerry Boykin, myself and Kamaal Saleem

This weekend gave us a good shot of "caffeine for the soul" with the "Alert '08" Conference at church. With Kamaal Saleem giving his testimony of how God radically saved a man out of radical Islam to General Jerry Boykin, founder of Delta Force telling us of the real and present danger of this battle and the need to engage in spiritual warfare, we are all deeply challenged. All 3500 who packed the church facility at this morning's event were blessed by the variety of speakers and timeliness of this prophetic update. After lunch, Dr. Tim LaHaye spoke clearly and passionately about the alliances of Iran with Russia but not merely to stimulate a sensationalistic endtime fervor. His real zeal was to see if the Lord would draw people to Himself. He definitely did as the front of the church was full of those who came to commit their lives to Christ. I spoke to one young woman from Espanola who made the long drive today after hearing about it on the radio. She came forward in response to the altar call and drove back home a new creation in Christ. Great times! What a fabulous church to be part of with so many committed followers of Christ who bring friends and family to hear the gospel at such an event.
